Finnfoam renovation board
The Finnfoam S40 renovation board is intended for applications where additional interior thermal insulation is required. Regular half-interfitted Finnfoam insulation boards are generally used for additional thermal insulation purposes but, when keeping the new structures as small as possible to save space is important, the S40 renovation board is often the ideal choice. The thickness of the renovation board is 40 mm and standard sheet dimensions are 600 mm × 2600 mm. The board is attached to the wall using wood strips (20 mm × 50 mm) that fit into the grooves at the edges. The boards are pressed between the wall and the wooden strips at their joints. The joint can be made leakproof by using elastic joint foam or putty. The resulting insulation layer is unbroken and has no cold bridges. The interior wall material is then attached to the strips. The structure takes up little space and is airtight. It also allows the wooden structures to expand and contract and improves the wall's humidity elimination properties. The top and bottom edges and through holes should be sealed with elastic foam. The resulting wall surface is unbroken and airtight – no more cold corners or drafts.
By remodelling a wall built following the old regulations (effective from 1985 to 2003, required U-value 0.28) with S40 Finnfoam renovation boards, the wall's insulation will be improved by over 30%. The U-value of the new wall will be approximately 0.20 W/(m2 K). In reality, the improvement may be even more, as the structure will be made practically leakproof. The average leak value of a house with a wooden frame is 4. When the leak value is reduced to 1 by improving the insulation, the energy consumption of a single-family home may be reduced by up to 15%. The leak value is not, however, considered in the calculation of a structure's U-value.
The older the wall is, the more the insulation properties will usually be improved. If the old wall has a porous insulation layer of approximately 10 to 12 cm, the S40 Finnfoam renovation board can be used to improve the wall's insulation properties by over 50%. The wall's new U-value will in this case be approximately 0.25.
Finnfoam renovation boards have good insulation properties and they are rigid – although the S40 is only 40 mm thick. The boards are pleasant to handle and easy to use. They do not crumble or produce dust.
